Community Networks –Connecting the Indigenous Communities of Ziro Valley, Arunachal Pradesh
In the current Digital Era, all Government policies are available online to be accessed by the beneficiaries, but, due to lack of internet and awareness they are unable to access the online process or even the general existence of these schemes and policies. Therefore, to promote digital inclusion and help create community development opportunities.
Digital Empowerment Foundation with Internet Society (ISOC), is implementing a project named ‘Community Networks – Connecting the Indigenous Communities of Ziro Valley’
The target is to set up around 50 access points in 10 villages to reach some 1000 households in the area along with setup of a Community Information Resource center with digital tools and facilities open to all community members. This location is internet dark zones which lack access to education, information, entitlements, and rights. The Project will help create the digital infrastructure and supporting services required to empower the community to fully participate in the digital economy.
After a process of identifying internet problem areas, we connected 4 schools and 1 Health Center from Community Information and Resource Center (CIRC). We identified that they were riddled with loss of internet connection, they had one device (Kyan) which was donated by the State Government and BBNL have provided the schools with connection in the past 2 years but it was dysfunctional from the beginning. This forced them to use their own mobile hotspot to run the Kyan but because of limits of data, mobile devices, access to data were holding them back. After establishing connection for them, they have high speed internet to run the device and are very happy with the services that Digital Empowerment Foundation has provided.
